In 2011, mental health problems and illnesses among working adults in Canada cost employers more than $6 billion in lost productivity from absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover.
Legislation has been enacted in several Canadian jurisdictions, which provides additional protection for the accommodation of mental health issues, as well as expanded compensability for mental health issues under workers’ compensation programs; particularly in relation to bullying, harassment and post-traumatic stress disorders.
However, these measures are addressing situations that, in most cases, could or should have been avoided. Taking proactive actions to promote and protect employee mental health has many positive benefits.
